Newcastle sheds clothes for US artist's latest 'nude installation'

www.chinanews.cn 2005-07-18 14:13:52

US photographer Spencer Tunick shoots a picture with hundreds of naked
people in the streets of Brugge, May 7, 2005. From 4:00 am (0300 GMT) on
July 17, the latest volunteers -- including some die-hard Tunick fans who
have taken part in his works around the world -- gathered at the Baltic
Gallery in Gateshead, just across the River Tyne from Newcastle city
centre. They were then herded around for pictures at five locations,
including across the Millennium Bridge, lying down at the quayside and
walking through Newcastle city centre, one of Britain's most famous
nightlife hotspots.

In this photo released Sunday July 17, 2005 naked models stand in place
as artist Spencer Tunick staged his largest United Kingdom installation
to date in the Gateshead area of northern England. Almost 1,700 people,
some from as far afield as Mexico, Belgium and Australia, participated
nude in a series of installations on Newcastle and Gateshead Quaysides.

China GDP growth 'likely to slow'

www.chinanews.cn 2005-07-12 11:22:10

(Agencies)

July 12 - China's economic growth will slow to 8.6 percent in the third
quarter and to 8.2 percent in the fourth amid government efforts to make
growth more sustainable, the China Securities Journal quoted a think-tank
as predicting.
That would take full-year growth to 8.8 percent, significantly lower than
9.5 percent seen last year and in 2003, the paper quoted a report by the
National Development and Reform Commission's Macroeconomic Institute as
saying.
The slower pace of growth would be in accordance with government efforts
to adjust macroeconomic controls and would not mean that China would
enter a cycle of low economic growth in the coming years, the paper
quoted the think-tank as saying.
The property market, which has been a focus of government efforts to cool
investment amid rapidly rising prices in major cities, would slow
significantly, the paper said, adding there were no assurances that a
soft landing in the sector could be achieved.
Export growth would also decelerate significantly, while a tight credit
environment would put the brakes on investment, it said.
China has entered a mild slowdown that could last one to two years, a
senior official from a powerful government agency said on Monday,
recommending faster credit growth as an antidote.

Although temperature of Xinjiang's Turpan remained over 40 degrees
Celsius for a few days, such high temperature can not stop tourists from
all over China from coming to enjoy hot sand therapy here. Sand therapy
of Turpan is a traditional folk therapeutics integrating sun bath,
magnetic therapy and massage therapy. As the sand in Turpan contains
plenty of magnetite filings, it has been proved evidently effective for
curing arthritis, lumbago and leg pain.

China to launch moon probing satellite next Apr.

www.chinanews.cn 2006-04-27 14:25:30

Chinanews, Hong Kong, Apr. 27 (By Deng Zhuoming) - Luan Enjie, chief
commander of China's lunar probe, indicated in Hong Kong on Wednesday
that the first-phase moon probing satellite of China's lunar probe is
likely to blast off in April, 2007.
Luan pointed out that China's ongoing lunar probe, namely the Chang'e
Project, will be completed by three stages to lay a foundation for
subsequent manned moon probes. China started this project in January,
2004. 2005 was a year to tackle key problems as the development,
experiment and technological breakthroughs for the initial sample had
been finished by the end of the year.
Luan revealed that after one year of exploration and research, many
difficulties have been solved. Whatever happens, China expects to finish
the production of the Chang'e satellite, which commenced manufacturing in
early 2006, within one year and get the satellite carrier system ready
this December. If everything goes smoothly, China's Chang'e satellite
will fly into space next April.
China's lunar probe consists of three steps, including orbiting, landing
and returning. China plans to launch the moon probing satellite around
2007, which is the first phase of the project. The second phase is to
launch a lunar soft-lander that will carry a lunar rover to conduct the
first lunar soft landing and automatic inspection and survey, which is
scheduled around 2012. The third phase refers to the launch of a lunar
soft-lander around 2017 to carry through initial automatic sampling on
the moon and take the samples back to the earth for analysis and research.

Oil refining companies still make losses

www.chinanews.cn 2006-04-25 15:05:12

Chinanews, Beijing, Apr.25 (By Yu Jingbo) - It was learnt yesterday from
the conference on economic operations convened by the National
Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) that owing to the obvious oil
product price gap between the Chinese market and the international
market, domestic oil refining companies are still making losses on the
whole and facing tremendous pressure on ensuring domestic refined oil
supply.
Zhu Hongren, deputy director general of the NDRC Bureau of Economic
Operations, said that in the first quarter, China's supply and demand of
coal, electricity, oil and transportation continued the trend of last
year, and the tension was obviously alleviated compared with the same
period last year.
Nonetheless, Zhu stated at the same time that though the tension has
eased up as a whole, the conflict between supply and demand will be hard
to eliminate fundamentally in a short period; therefore the pressure on
guaranteeing domestic oil product supply will remain tremendous.
Zhu indicated that China would closely track and monitor the influence of
changes in the international oil market and adjustments of domestic oil
product prices on domestic oil product supply, reinforce overall
regulation on the operation of the petroleum and petrochemical industry,
and guarantee oil supply in key regions.
On March 26, China carried out the first oil product price adjustment
this year. In order to make sure the smooth implementation of the
comprehensive scheme to reform the oil price forming mechanism and the
oil product price adjustment measures, prevent certain oil product
dealers from adjusting prices without approval of relevant authorities,
NDRC recently issued an urgent notice to conduct a nation-wide oil
product price inspection.

Beijing's local snacks disappearing fast

www.chinanews.cn 2006-04-21 09:36:17

Chinanews, Apr.20 - The Qianmen Hutong (narrow lane) is being dismantled.
With more and more hutongs disappearing, the "habitat" where Beijing's
leisurely local snacks can be found is shrinking by the day.
In the food family, snacks are the most casual and undoubtedly worth
waiting for. If dinner is compared to an adult, snack can be regarded as
a child, something consumed in a small quantity between meals. People eat
snacks not only to fill their stomachs but also to fulfill the quest for
unique flavors in an unrestrained environment. When one grows up, one has
many opportunities to gobble banquet-like meals. Sometimes, one remembers
snacks and tries for a chance to savor familiar flavors once again. This
is similar to the boredom that comes with being stuck in the same posture
for a long time that can be best dispelled by dashing outside and
sprinting in the wild.
Innocence can be found in snacks. Tastes always take shape in the period
from infancy to childhood. Snacks often accompany one's growing-up
memories; and are a type of time tunnel made up of taste buds. No matter
how old one is, if only he tastes his childhood favorite snacks, he will
feel that time has run backwards and he has returned to the past. Just
like a stick of sugar-coated fruits, a roasted sweet potato or a sip of
bean milk with fried dough rings will bring a typical Beijinger back to
his past.
Any place has its own specially cultivated product nurtured by the local
natural environment. People call food processed by local residents in a
unique way "flavor," spoken of in the same breath as lifestyle and
custom. If an out-of-towner, such as a traveler, arrives at a place and
wants to learn about the natural conditions and social customs of this
place, his experience of local food will be crucial. Generally speaking,
if one is not used to and does not like the local food, he is inclined to
dislike local life and customs as well. This is a visit and exchange of
taste buds.
Different from visible buildings such as a house and a street, flavor is
intangible and invariably fades away without much notice. For instance,
the disappearance of Beijing's snacks has not drawn much attention like
the dismantlement of courtyard houses in the city.
Hutongs are the roots of snacks. Without them, Beijing snacks will become
homeless. Snacks were originally a product of hutongs and a community
where people knew each other. At that time, people lived on ground
floors. Neighbors, both adults and children, would greet each other and
hang out around snack booths in hutongs. Nowadays, people closely pack
different floors on skyscrapers, high above flat earth. Stacked up one
atop the other, these high-rise residents, whether on high or low floors,
run into each other daily as they ascend or descent, but they hardly know
their neighbors. Without Beijing's hutongs, snacks will be scattered from
supermarkets to malls to night markets on major thoroughfares.
Consequently the city will gradually lose its source of nutrition and
become coarse, like a beauty missing her moist and pink skin.
Beijing is the capital, and the capital city's liberalization determined
that Beijing's snacks would be transformed faster than snacks in other
cities. The snacking customs of other places, from far north to down
south, have brought new flavors to Beijing. The pursuit of fashion and
novelty is human nature, and applies to what people eat. Beijing's snacks
have become more varied but also more like snacks of other places.
Currently, hand-pulled noodles, steamed dumpling in soup, lamb kabobs,
chocolate, ice cream, hamburgers and potato chips, seen everywhere in
Beijing, might become the memory of taste for this new generation
children.
Those indescribable flavors might never reappear. In the past, life was
harsh and snacks were not consumed at will. Nonetheless, whenever one
snacked, one tasted real flavor and the natural colors, smell and taste
would linger in one's memory. Nowadays, snacking is no longer a big deal,
but people can never savor that combination of color, smell and taste.
Chemical fertilizers, steroids, pesticides, whiteners, pigments and
reclaimed oil turn street snacks from standards of tastes into objects of
suspicious origins.
If the changes accompanying this era is a symphony, a snack is no more
than a ballad, but this ballad echoes the innermost, warmest and softest
sentiments of one's heart and its invisibility and silence add a tinge of
melancholy to the melody.
For Beijing's residents, hutongs with snack booths and stable
neighborhoods are not the only things fading away. They also witness
something else taking place beyond recall in front of their eyes -
age-old Beijing flavors are becoming mere memories day by day.

China's spaceflight, cultural relics and stamp collection authorities
jointly issued on Thursday a limited edition of 999 sets of "Taihe
treasures - precious royal seal in spacecraft" which were created based
on cultural relics and stamps carried by the Shenzhou VI spaceship around
the globe. This precious royal seal modeled after the design of "treasure
of emperor", the first royal seal in the Qing Dynasty (1616-1911). Made
of green jasper from Xinjiang with pure gold and silver dragon-shaped
knobs, this commemorative seal complements the valuable stamp on the
Shenzhou VI spaceflight to express the theme of utilizing the space
peacefully.
