Chinanews, Hong Kong, Apr. 27 (By Deng Zhuoming) - Luan Enjie, chief
commander of China's lunar probe, indicated in Hong Kong on Wednesday
that the first-phase moon probing satellite of China's lunar probe is
likely to blast off in April, 2007.
Luan pointed out that China's ongoing lunar probe, namely the Chang'e
Project, will be completed by three stages to lay a foundation for
subsequent manned moon probes. China started this project in January,
2004. 2005 was a year to tackle key problems as the development,
experiment and technological breakthroughs for the initial sample had
been finished by the end of the year.
Luan revealed that after one year of exploration and research, many
difficulties have been solved. Whatever happens, China expects to finish
the production of the Chang'e satellite, which commenced manufacturing in
early 2006, within one year and get the satellite carrier system ready
this December. If everything goes smoothly, China's Chang'e satellite
will fly into space next April.
China's lunar probe consists of three steps, including orbiting, landing
and returning. China plans to launch the moon probing satellite around
2007, which is the first phase of the project. The second phase is to
launch a lunar soft-lander that will carry a lunar rover to conduct the
first lunar soft landing and automatic inspection and survey, which is
scheduled around 2012. The third phase refers to the launch of a lunar
soft-lander around 2017 to carry through initial automatic sampling on
the moon and take the samples back to the earth for analysis and research.
