www.chinanews.cn 2005-08-29 16:09:51
A stone Buddha "secluded" in Xiashui Village, Dula Township, Baiyun
District, 16 kilometers away in the northern suburb of Guiyang. This
Buddha is 50 meters tall and its head is 16 meters in height, 4 meters
taller than that of the Leshan Giant Buddha. This stone Buddha, sitting
leisurely by the Shalao River, was proved to be an unfinished work of
master Haineng, the teacher of Master Haitong, who was the sculptor of
the Leshan Giant Buddha in the Tang Dynasty (618AD--907AD). For years,
only those from the academic circle are aware of this stone Buddha while
most tourists know little about it. This Xiashui giant Buddha is honored
as the No. 1 natural stone Buddha in the world.
