China to remeasure length of Great Wall

www.chinanews.cn 2006-02-16 17:19:12

Chinanews, Feb. 16 C The China Great Wall Association will join hands
with the State Bureau of Surveying and Mapping as well as other relative
departments to remeasure the actual length of the Great Wall. With the
help of experts and by using remote sensing technology, it is expected
that the space distribution of the existing Great Wall as well as those
parts that are submerged can be traced.
The Great Wall is built in places with complex geographic features. Some
parts of the Great Wall were built in mountainous regions and others went
through deserts, where detailed data of the Great Wall is difficult to
obtain. Inaccuracy might also arise from improper measuring methods or
obsolete devices. Due to these factors, the current length of the Great
Wall (7,300 kilometers) probably does not reflect its actual length.
The China Great Wall Association has outlined a survey program of the
Ming Great Wall with navigational sensing technology. The program was
nodded by experts and is now waiting for approval from the State
Administration of Cultural Heritage.
By applying the remote sensing technology, geographic information system
and the global positioning system and with accurate calculations,
Scientists hope to obtain a set of authoritative statistics about the
existing Great Wall regarding its distribution, length and height. The
statistics will later be publicized worldwide.
Based on statistics, relative departments will integrate other audio and
data information about the Great Wall in order to set up a data bank for
all specific parts of the Great Wall. It is expected that this
information will provide complete, accurate geographic information and
the application service in the survey, research, conservation and
exploitation of the Great Wall.

Shanghai single ladies crazy about Valentine's Day

www.chinanews.cn 2006-02-16 16:49:11

Chinanews, Shanghai, Feb. 13 (By Chen Jing, Yuan Fang) - Worried about
having a lonely Valentine's Day, Miss M, a young woman who works at the
administrative division of a company located in Shanghai's Puxi Area,
hastened to post an advertisement on a dating website to find a
boyfriend. Her advertisement was quite simple and did not include
detailed requirements. All details would be talked about in QQ (the most
popular instant communication tool in China). Soon after the
advertisement was posted, Miss M was busy talking with more than 30 men
who wanted to befriend her. Although Miss M had not decided who she would
be with on a romantic Valentine's Day, she believed that internet
matchmaking would bring her Mr. Right.
Miss M is not alone. At present, nearly 300 single women like Miss M have
posted advertisements on the internet to find a lover for this
Valentine's Day. These ads generated active responses and provoked
numerous replies, the editor of the dating site cried "ladies are also
crazy about Valentine's Day!"
Although the media have reported that males go online to hire temporary
girlfriends for Valentine's Day and even make a detailed contract for
that purpose, it is more eye-catching for a female to join this campaign
and post an ad to find a boyfriend.
Why have these women, who appear to others as introverted and reserved
and hesitant to express their feelings, have become so crazy about
Valentine's Day?
Population census statistics show that single males and females in
Beijing and Shanghai have exceeded one million. There are more males than
females in the total population but the number of single women is not
small. Compared with males, marriage is more important than career for
females in the eyes of society. "Three high" (high educational level,
high-ranking positions and high income) single females have particularly
drawn wide attention.
The above-mentioned females who posted ads on the internet to find
boyfriends to spend Valentine's Day are mainly white collars aged between
20 and 30.
Owing to their jobs, they are confined to their offices and have few
chances to meet people of the opposite sex. As a result, their social
circles are small. Moreover, these females are well educated and have
known some successful persons through their work, and they themselves
have certain accomplishments. Their own high qualifications and their
worldly requirements of a spouse narrow their potential choices to a
small minority of males.
On the other hand, as "Economics of Everyday Life" overflows, people have
started to consciously think about the economics of love. There is little
space for people to choose from a limited number of potential lovers. In
particular, dating, watching movies and shopping cost a lot of energy and
money, but the results were often disappointing. In pursuit of their own
careers and independence, females, who hold up half the sky, naturally
choose to spend their time and vigor on work with higher yields and lower
risks.
Characteristic feminine restraint and shyness are also a reason that
cannot be neglected. But these characteristics are not confined only to
Chinese people and females. Harlequin love report 2006 that was released
by Canadian media before this Valentine's Day shows that Canadians are
overly shy in love and not brave enough to express their love to persons
they admire. As a result, nearly three fourths of single Canadians lack
courage to voice their love.
The three barriers that prevent females from finding their Mr. Rights,
namely small social circle, overly high cost and shyness, do not exist in
online matchmaking. Owing to abundant information and confidentiality,
online matchmaking has become popular with people with high educational
level. A survey indicates that couples who tie the knot via the internet
are on the rise year by year. Online matchmaking will probably become the
most popular way in the future.
When such a nice matchmaker is available, one can see why single women go
crazy right before Valentine's Day?

Booklets about general knowledge of law are sent to migrant workers in
Anhui province, on Feb. 14, 2006. From Feb. 13th to Feb. 14th, the legal
aid center of the Judicial Bureau and the Trade Unions of Anhui's Chuzhou
City commenced the "Action of Spring Breeze," an event aiming to promote
general knowledge of law among migrant workers and provide consulting
services, on Chuzhou's railway station square. Nearly 10,000 copies of
"manuals for people's convenience" on general knowledge of law issued by
the legal aid center were distributed to migrant workers to teach them
how to protect their legal rights.

A relevant official of China's Ministry of Railways made some positive
comments on the real name ticketing policy implemented in some railway
stations on Feb. 14th, and affirmed its effect in cracking down on ticket
scalpers. However, China still lacks the conditions to promote such a
policy in all railways as a result of technological challenges and cost
of time. It takes considerable time to enter and check a passenger's name
and ID number, which means a longer queuing in front of ticket offices.

Producing tree crown-like iron sparks is a unique stunt with a history of
several centuries performed during the folk sacrificial ceremony to
celebrate the Lantern Festival in Nuanquan Town, Wei County, Hebei
Province. The performer will first melt raw iron into molten iron and
keep the temperature, then scoop molten iron with a willow ladle which
has been steeped in cold water and splash it on the wall to create tree
crown-shaped iron sparks, after which this stunt was named.

China urges patience on Iran nuclear issue

www.chinanews.cn 2006-02-15 10:00:38

(Source: Xinhuanet)

Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesman Liu Jianchao is answering questions at
a regular news conference in Beijing Tuesday.

BEIJING, Feb. 15 - China has called for the international community to
remain sober-minded, patient and flexible when trying to resolve the Iran
nuclear issue, said the Foreign Ministry Spokesman Liu Jianchao at a
regular news conference here Tuesday.
China encourages all parties to do more to increase trust and avoid any
actions that may worsen the issue, Liu said.
He told reporters that China is concerned with the latest development of
the Iran nuclear issue. There are still enough room to resolve the issue
under the framework of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and
the international community should not abandon diplomatic efforts, he
said.
Regarding the scheduled nuclear talks between Russia and Iran on Feb. 16,
Liu said China hopes the talks will be held on time and achieve positive
outcome.
Iranian government spokesman Gholam-Hossein Elham told reporters on
Monday that a new round of talks between Iran and Russia, previously
scheduled on Thursday in Moscow, has been delayed and that Iran would
resume industrial enrichment ahead of the IAEA's meeting on March 6.
China is playing its own role in the resolution of the nuclear issue and
will work with all relevant parties, including the United States, the
European Union and other developing countries to properly resolve the
issue, Liu said.
Liu also underscored that a solution through dialogue serves the
interests of Iran and all parties concerned, and said China's efforts on
this issue constitute part of its commitment to establishing world peace.
Alaeddin Boroujerdi, head of the Iranian National Security and Foreign
Relations Committee, told state television Tuesday that Iran had resumed
"peaceful" uranium enrichment at the Natanz plant in the presence of
inspectors from the IAEA.
The resumption was the final step of Iran's reaction to a recent decision
by the IAEA to report their nuclear activities to the UN Security
Council. (Special report: Iran Nuclear Crisis)
President Hu's visit to US
When answering a journalist's question about Chinese President Hu's visit
to the United States, Liu said that both China and the United States are
actively preparing for the planned visit in the first half of 2006.
Liu said that the two sides would decide the specific date of the visit
through diplomatic channels.
"China will continue its efforts to ensure the success of the visit and
accomplishment of expected goals." Liu said.

Temple on Feb. 12, when this year's traditional Chinese Lantern Festival
fell, Nanjing organized 4,000-odd policemen to form "two-way passages"
with "human walls" to lead the visitors to avoid potential accidents
which might result from disorderliness.

China should refine 30 megatons of oil in 2006

www.chinanews.cn 2006-02-13 15:59:46

Chinanews, Beijing, Feb. 13 (By Yu Jingbo) - The Department of Industrial
Policies under the National Development and Reform Commission disclosed
that based on overall estimation, China's oil product consumption will
grow 5.4% to 7% this year. In order to ensure domestic oil product
supply, China will have to increase its refined oil output by 15 million
tons, with the total volume reaching 300 million tons.
According to related estimation, China's minimum domestic consumption of
oil products will amount to 177 million tons this year, up 9 million tons
year on year. The Chinese government said that at present oil refining
facilities of the two oil giants, PetroChina and Sinopec, are running to
their full capacity. In 2006 they have to increase 17 million tons of oil
refining capacity to meet the demand of oil product production.
The Chinese government admitted that there are two major problems in
China's oil refining industry currently. First, faulty policy on oil
product prices will result in tremendous losses of the industry. Second,
vulnerable supply security system can not cope with vital emergency.
China's oil product price is lower than that of the international market
on the whole at the moment, giving rise to losses of the entire oil
refining industry. In view of this problem, related departments have
commenced improvement and consummation for the price forming mechanism.
Based on insiders' view, even though international oil price tends to
reach a plateau in 2006, China's oil product price will still face
pressure of price hike. Moreover, as consumption duty will soon be
levied, as far as consumers are concerned, oil price rise will be a
dominant trend.
It was learned that in 2005 China's oil refining industry saw a net loss
of 30 billion yuan (US$3.6 billion), strikingly in contrast with 20.8
billion yuan of profit in 2004.

Retail sales to hit 10 trillion yuan by 2010

www.chinanews.cn 2006-02-13 09:48:16

(Source: China Daily)

Citizens shop in a super market in Weifang, East China's Shandong
Province in this photo taken on January 10, 2006.

Feb. 13 - China's retail sales will continue to grow at a fast rate over
the next few years, thanks to the government's increasing emphasis on
stimulating consumer demand.
Huang Hai, assistant minister of commerce, said the nation's retail
sales, an important indicator for the consumption demand, will grow at an
average annual rate of more than 11 per cent during the 11th Five-Year
Plan (2006-10) period.
"By 2010, the country's retail sales will reach over 10 trillion yuan
(US$1.2 trillion)," Huang was quoted yesterday as saying by Xinhua.
Earlier figures from the National Bureau of Statistics indicate that
China's retail sales rose 12.9 per cent year-on-year to 6.7 trillion yuan
(US$828.3 billion) last year.
Such a strong growth, fuelled mainly by rising household incomes and more
stable consumer prices, is just what the government wants to see, said Qi
Jingmei, a senior economist with the State Information Centre.
"The current economy relies too much on fixed asset investment, which
results in both overcapacity and trade friction," she said.
In developed countries such as the United States, consumption usually
accounts for 70 to 80 per cent of the gross domestic product (GDP), but
it accounted for just 33.3 per cent of China's GDP last year.
The government wants to let consumption play a more important role in its
future economic growth, Qi said.
Finance Minister Jin Renqing said late last year that the country's
fiscal policy will help boost consumption demand during the 11th
Five-Year Plan period.
Such fiscal measures will include an increased spending in the fields of
education, health care and social security, he said.
Zhuang Jian, a senior economist with the Asian Development Bank's
Resident Mission in China, said Jin's pledge is good news for both urban
and rural residents.
"With less financial burden, people will be more willing to spend," he
said.
The government has already taken a series of other measures to adjust the
relationship between investment and consumption, Zhuang said.
As of January 1 this year, the government raised the threshold on
personal income tax from 800 yuan (US$99) to 1,600 yuan (US$197), which
has increased the people's spending capacity by letting them keep more
money.
The government also gave up agriculture taxes and made compulsory school
education free in rural areas, which saves money for rural citizens.
