China to remeasure length of Great Wall

www.chinanews.cn 2006-02-16 17:19:12

Chinanews, Feb. 16 C The China Great Wall Association will join hands
with the State Bureau of Surveying and Mapping as well as other relative
departments to remeasure the actual length of the Great Wall. With the
help of experts and by using remote sensing technology, it is expected
that the space distribution of the existing Great Wall as well as those
parts that are submerged can be traced.
The Great Wall is built in places with complex geographic features. Some
parts of the Great Wall were built in mountainous regions and others went
through deserts, where detailed data of the Great Wall is difficult to
obtain. Inaccuracy might also arise from improper measuring methods or
obsolete devices. Due to these factors, the current length of the Great
Wall (7,300 kilometers) probably does not reflect its actual length.
The China Great Wall Association has outlined a survey program of the
Ming Great Wall with navigational sensing technology. The program was
nodded by experts and is now waiting for approval from the State
Administration of Cultural Heritage.
By applying the remote sensing technology, geographic information system
and the global positioning system and with accurate calculations,
Scientists hope to obtain a set of authoritative statistics about the
existing Great Wall regarding its distribution, length and height. The
statistics will later be publicized worldwide.
Based on statistics, relative departments will integrate other audio and
data information about the Great Wall in order to set up a data bank for
all specific parts of the Great Wall. It is expected that this
information will provide complete, accurate geographic information and
the application service in the survey, research, conservation and
exploitation of the Great Wall.
