More than 13 per cent of Chinese youths and young adults are addicted to
the Internet, according to a major survey released Tuesday.
Chinanews, Nov. 22 - At present, China's young internet addicts account
for 13.2% of the total young netizens and about 13% of
non-internet-addict netizens are inclined to be addicted, read the
statistical report on China's young internet addicts issued by the China
Youth Association for Network Development in Beijing on Nov. 22nd.
Based on the report, China's young internet addicts have the following
features: a larger proportion of boys are addicted to internet than
girls, junior high school and vocational high school students are most
seriously addicted, minor internet addicts take up a large proportion,
and the phenomenon of internet addiction is widely distributed with no
linkage to geographical locations or economic factors.
In view of such problems, experts from China Youth Association for
Network Development said that young people are vulnerable in self
protection awareness and self-control and easily tempted by erotic
information and violent online games. Excessive internet enthrallment and
addiction will not only affect their normal studies, life and social
intercourse, but also give rise to tremendous harm to the society.
The survey covered 26 provincial capitals and 4 municipalities. The
survey was conducted in schools, internet cafes and other public
locations. 15,600 questionnaires were distributed and 15,023 valid
questionnaires were returned, with a return rate of 96.3%.
