With rumble of explosion and sound of excavators, Kuocang Mountain
tunnel, the mainland's longest expressway tunnel, commenced construction
on Aug. 15, 2005. Kuocang Mountain tunnel is a controlled project of
Zhuyong Expressway (from Zhejiang's Zhuji to Yongjia in Zhejiang's
Wenzhou). The 7.93-kilometer-long tunnel is reputed as "No. 1 tunnel in
eastern China" and mainland's longest expressway tunnel. Consuming a
total investment of 16.39 billion yuan (2.02 billion US dollars), the
225.3km long Zhuyong Expressway will be completed and open to traffic by
the end of 2007.
