China has largest personal credit info database

Chinanews, Feb. 28 - The basic personal credit information database is
reputed as "personal credit archives". People's Bank of China (PBC)
deputy governor Su Ning revealed lately that China has officially put its
basic personal credit information database, the largest in the world,
into operation.
Up through the end of January 2006, the database has recorded 486 million
natural persons, with the information covering basic personal
information, information about balance account opening, bank credit
information, and information about housing accumulation funds which does
not belong to the banking system. China has generally fulfilled the goal
of establishing a set of credit records for all individuals engaged in
economic activities in all cities and some rural areas.
Su made the above remarks on the 2006 PBC credit administration working
conference.
Su indicated that PBC will accelerate establishment and improvement of
the basic corporate and personal credit information databases in 2006.
The basic corporate credit information database will realize interlinked
operation among all commercial banks and qualified rural credit
cooperatives throughout China by June 30, 2006. After a one-month
transition period, the operational bank credit registration and inquiry
system will completely switch to the basic corporate credit information
database. PBC will strive to perfect the basic personal credit
information database as soon as possible and adopt various measures to
improve the quality of data.
