China's own Valentine's Day
www.chinanews.cn 2005-08-10 14:32:09
Chinanews, Aug. 9 - In folklore, China's "Seventh Night", July 7th in the
lunar calendar, has been compared to China's Valentine's Day. This
Thursday will be the annual mythical meeting of the cowhand and the girl
weaver by the birds' bridge and a chorus has risen to make this
traditional festival a legal holiday. It was learned that the discussion
on this topic will be conducted on that day on Wuyi Mountain and eager
lovers from Nanjing have packed their bags to go and attend this meeting.
It was learned there are seven special trains for lovers from Wuhan,
Shanghai, Nanchang, Xiamen and Guangdong. Even though Nanjing does not
have a special train for the occasion, couples can transfer at Shanghai
to board the special trains. It was mentioned that lovers going to Wuyi
Mountain would include couples from Japan, Denmark and Korea. Famed
Chinese sociologists, folk customs specialists and university professors
will also congregate at Wuyi Mountain and discuss in depth how to
propagate traditional Chinese culture and explore and discuss how to
propose to representatives of the National People's Congress to turn
"Seventh Night" into a legal holiday.
What attracted these lovers are not only the forum, but also the other
activity for couples. As the focal point of activity on site, the "birds'
bridge" is being rushed to be completed on time to appear as heaven on
earth on that date. In addition, Fuzhou, Chongqing, Chengdu and Jinan
also selected singers of love ballads and "love representatives" ahead of
time.
