China faces dual pressure from population

www.chinanews.cn 2006-02-24 14:37:10

Chinanews, Beijing, Feb. 24 (By Zhang Ximin) - China National Committee
on Aging released a research report on the future trend of China's aging
population on Thursday, showing that China faces dual pressure from aging
population and overlarge population. This is the first time that China
issued a report on aging population.
The report reveals that the 21st century will be an era of aging
population. China turned into an aging society in 1999 as one of the
first few developing countries with an aging population.
Based on this report, the period from 2001 to 2020 will be a phase of
rapid aging. During this period, China's aging population will increase
5.96 million each year on average, with the annual growth rate averaging
3.28%. By the year 2020, China's aging population will reach 248 million.
Those above 80 years old will amount to 30.67 million, taking up 12.7% of
the total elderly population.
The report indicates that China's aging population features six major
characteristics including huge aging population, rapid growth, imbalanced
regional development, evident inverted aging situation in urban and rural
areas, larger female aging population, and aging ahead of modernization.
The report also mirrors that aging population will inevitably result in
some new conflicts and pressure, including the pressure on social
security like endowment insurance and medical care and on facilities for
services offered to the elderly.
At the same time, the Chinese government and society have to invest
heavily in adjusting consumption structure, industrial structure and
social administration system to adapt themselves to great changes of the
aging structure.
